A Review of The Grill by Delis Restaurant: Not for the Budget Eater
As a foodie, when I'm pretty overwhelmed, food makes me happy. So after a mini-rant to my friend on the craziness of my week, the response was "I know good food will make you better".
So it sure helped when this friend - as true friends do - suggested we have lunch at The Grille by Delis: a newish restaurant in Victoria Island, Lagos. But you know what was more exciting: it was not on my account - we weren't even going dutch!
C'mon who says no to free food! Shout to friends who know how to brighten your day. I tagged along with my biggest appetite and an empty stomach - as I had eaten absolutely nothing that day.
On arrival, the hostess welcomed us warmly and ushered us to our seats which were by the window overlooking the outdoor space. Although there's indoor and outdoor sitting, we opted for the former. The ambience was very upscale, fresh and bright which I loved.
Once we settled, the waiter welcomed us with hot bread sticks and offered us some water. The very creamy butter melted lightly on the breadsticks and I didn’t realize when we had finished a full basket!
For starters, I requested a Caesar Salad and Capasante con Purea Di Prisellini (Seared Scallops), while my friend ordered a Duck Salad and the Fritto Misto (Mixed Seafood Platter). I love a good Caesar Salad and this ticked all the boxes. Of course, I delved into my friend's plate. Afterall, this was all about making me feel better. But on a serious note, is there anyone who doesn't get excited by what the other person orders? And are we really friends if I can't eat off your plate?
Ok, back to the food; the Duck Salad was amazing, the cranberries sprinkled on it added an extra kick. The fitfam in me was all sorts of excited getting my greens in.
I generally love a good cocktail especially when the drink hits the spot! So I ordered the ‘Honey Love Me More’. Now to be fair, while it wasn't all that bad, I can't explain why it tasted like I was drinking my rose water facial cleanser. Here's how the cocktail was described: "vodka infused with strawberries, rose water and lime juice". So I kinda expected to taste more of the strawberries and vodka - but that didn't come through. My friend ordered the “A” and it was an absolute hit! I practically took over the drink and it was a consolation for mine!
As we were already stuffed from the starters, we decided to share a steak. (Or maybe it was just so I couldn’t dip my hands into the food across me). Being the trusted foodie, I got to pick out our mains and so I ordered an Australian Cut Rib Eye (250g) with Peppercorn sauce and sides of Handcut Fries. My food buddy decided to include a side of grilled Asparagus. The Nigerian in me requested my steak to be medium well (no pink please!) and it was true to that. The fries and asparagus were a very good pair to the steak - we totally enjoyed it!
~ The Grill is very pricey, so go armed with a full wallet as it will set you back more than a couple thousands of Naira. It clearly isn't for the budget eater. Some may even get upset at the prices. You've been warned.
~ At the moment, it seems to be one of the reigning restaurants around that axis so you may run into a few celebrities. If you like that sort of thing, you'd be pleased.
~ But yes, it's an ideal spot for intimate dates - and if you're looking to impress someone, take them to The Grill by Delis.
