The Easiest Puff Pastry Sausage Roll (+ 5 Favourite Breakfast Pantry Items)
It happened so fast - my maternity leave is over but it’s been an exciting 4 months, bonding with my little one. Now that I reflect, the last few months have been exciting. In addition to the midnight feeds and hundreds of diaper change, I have fueled my passion for cooking and food so much compared to my maternity leave for my first baby which I basically used it to complete my thesis for my MSC Finance Program.
This time around, I have increased my scanty herb garden - good old fennel and dill joined the herb stand. I also started growing more vegetables aside from tomatoes - introduced Cauliflower, Lettuce - purple and green, Cabbage and Green Peppers. Honestly growing your food is so therapeutic it deserves a separate blog post! As regards to cooking I learnt many more techniques. I decided to engage chefs I knew were the best in the field in the country to guide me through and I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it.
As I prepare to get back to work, I am trying to get my infant prepared for the long separation during the day. Also I have to ensure my plans align with my preschooler’s in terms of her activities - luckily we already have a routine in place.
In addition I have to make weekly meal plans. I wouldn’t be at home much so I need to stock the pantry and freezer. I will explore all necessary shortcuts to ensure we still have amazing homemade dinners and breakfast. Speaking of breakfast, five pantry Items I cannot do without for breakfast and I totally recommend to you are:
Canned Tuna for quick sandwiches
Baked Beans - I can eat them with anything
Tortillas - they make amazing chicken, fish or Veggie wraps
Cereals and Granola - my daughter’s favorite is coco pops and granola just makes our yoghurt smoothies better
Breadcrumbs (especially those seasoned ones) they make our scotch eggs, and sausage rolls much better.
Breadcrumbs reminds me of my make ahead, puff pastry sausage roll recipe, and I’m sharing it with you today!
Puff Pastry Sausage Rolls:
(Makes Half a Dozen)
300 grams of sausage meat
1/2 cup of bread crumbs - mine was seasoned with black pepper and lemon zest.
Salt (depends on the seasoning in your sausage meat)
250 grams of puff pastry - find this in your frozen food section
A teaspoon of black pepper - if you don’t already have it in your breadcrumb mix
A teaspoon of dry Herb mix
An Egg Yolk - to use as Egg wash and to seal the edges.
Sesame seeds for garnish - Black Sesame Seeds have so much attitude in my opinion!
In a bowl mix the sausage meat, bread crumbs, salt, black pepper and herb mix.
When it all comes together, roll the meat mixture in a cylindrical shape and set aside.
Roll out your Puff Pastry block to about 8cm wide and 24 cm long and 1/4 of an inch thick. (I hear Joseph Joseph has a really cool rolling pin that measures - I always make a mental note to add to my wish list)
Place the meat mixture on one end and roll over covering with the puff pastry sheet.
Seal the edges with the egg wash and cut the long sausage to your desired seize.
You can store in an airtight container in the freezer and bake when ready.
Just remember to allow it thaw in the fridge the night before you need it for a quick bake.
It should bake at 180-200 degree Celsius for 20-25 minutes.
Also remember to use the egg wash just before you bake for that golden glaze.
And that’s it! Super easy and can be used for breakfast or as a snack. You may also multiply the recipe for a larger quantity.
